What are Pinworms?
Pinworms are small, thin, white worms (resembling tiny threads) that live in the human intestine. They are among the most common parasitic infections in children and spread through the transmission of their microscopic eggs from one person to another (often via contaminated hands, surfaces, or toys).
Why does the itching increase at night?
Anal itching at night is the most common symptom. The scientific reason for this is:
At night, while the child is sleeping and their body is relaxed, female pinworms migrate out of the anus to lay their eggs on the surrounding skin.
The female secretes chemicals while laying eggs, which causes severe irritation and intense itching.
The eggs stick to the child's fingers (especially under the fingernails) during scratching, which restarts the cycle of infection if hands are not washed thoroughly.
General Tips:
1. Consult a Doctor: If you suspect an infection, you must see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate medication (anti-parasitic treatment), which is usually prescribed for the entire household.
2. Personal Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
