After a full week of my daughter’s persistent itchy eye, I thought it was just transient allergies or a minor infection that would clear up with eye drops and antibiotics. However, on the morning of the seventh day, while I was trying to clean her matted eyelashes, I spotted something strange clinging to the edge of her eyelid, and I realized that what my daughter was suffering from was not the simple matter we had all imagined.
I arrived at the clinic holding Layan in my arms as if I feared she might slip away from me at any moment. The little one was exhausted from endless crying, itching, and lack of sleep. Her eyes were visibly swollen, and yellow discharge was matted between her lashes, making it look as though she hadn't slept in days.
The doctor greeted us calmly and asked me to sit her in the examination chair.
Layan tried to resist at first, but she was too weak to even cry; she simply clung to my clothes, whimpering in a faint voice that tore my heart apart more than any screaming I had heard from her all week.
The doctor approached the examination lamp and shone the bright light in front of her eye. He then began to inspect her eyelid and lashes with extreme precision, while I watched his face, trying to catch any sign that might reassure me or explain what was happening.
At first, he seemed calm.
Then, he furrowed his brows slightly.
Finally, he asked the nurse for another tool."
