He flipped through several pages, then said, 'There is acute bacterial conjunctivitis.'
I felt the words pass by me without fully grasping them. He continued, 'There is also severe inflammation of the eyelid margins.'
He then pointed to another photo, 'And there is also clear inflammation in the eyelash follicles.'
My confusion grew, but the doctor didn't stop. He pulled out another report and said, 'Furthermore, the microscopic examination showed a significant increase in eyelash mites.'
I looked at him, uncomprehending. He explained, 'Eyelash mites are tiny microscopic organisms that naturally live on the skin of most humans. However, in some cases, and with the presence of severe inflammation or contamination, their numbers multiply abnormally, causing intense itching and persistent irritation of the eyelid.'
He then pulled a final paper from the file and said, 'As for the bacterial culture, it showed dense growth of *Staphylococcus aureus* bacteria.'
Silence fell. I was trying to process everything I was hearing."
"'Where did all that bacteria come from?'
'How did it reach my daughter's eye?'
'And how did it all begin in the first place?'
It was as if the doctor had read my thoughts. He said, 'There is something else.'
I felt as if my heart had stopped.
He reached out toward a small vial that was placed on the desk—the same vial into which he had placed the foreign object he removed from Layan's eye—and said:
'We have analyzed the object that was stuck between the eyelashes.'"
